Here's a list:
1. Ignored by media. If people demanded that the media show more Green, then they would.
2. People are afraid to make a statement with their vote. They feel like they have to choose the "lesser of two evils", and vote for one of the big two. Why vote for an evil if you can choose to vote for a good?
3. The "pot-smoking hippie" stereotype. It doesn't seem to matter that a lot of Green party members are upstanding, hard-working, university-degree-holding members of society who have never smoked pot in their lives. When the media shows a green member, it's the stereotype they show.
4. The general public thinks that Green policies are entirely focused on environment. Few people realize that social justice, non-violence, true democracy, social inclusion, and whole host of other issues are also a part of the platform.
5. Fear of losing consumerist freedom. Americans love their SUV's and are afraid that voting Green is going to make them lose their freedom to drive it. Americans love WALMART, and are afraid that they will all be shut down by the Greens.
6. Ignorance of how the "American Dream" way of life is unsustainable in the long run, and ignorance of how this way of life preys upon the poor in America and overseas.
7. Anti-Green propaganda funded by big oil money, vs. grassroots volunteers and little big money. It can be hard to reach a lot of people with little funding available to influence the masses.
These are the big ones I can think of.

The biggest problem facing Green Party candidates is the fact that they are Green Party candidates.
By that, I mean, they are candidates for a very small third party group, which has not show heretofore any support by electorates around the US. Mostly, they are the means of exercising a protest vote in campaigns for leftists and environmental radicals. Their only significant electoral victories have been in smaller nonpartisan races, where they don't disclose their party affilliation.
The Green Party has not had significant support in gaining a place on ballots permanently, with the exception of the protest vote in 2004 for Ralph Nader, which managed to piss off Democrats and liberals at the Greens, for diverting voters away from Kerry, and insuring the re-election of George Bush.

Wellllll, their not well known??, maybe? Hummmmm, good question.
While attending college this last fall, there was someone from the green party who was local, running for a seat. However, when I had asked this person a question...they only gave me half and answer. In other words, if they didn't know about the entirety...they wouldn't get my vote.

We don't have a weighted voting system in the US.
People will not throw away their vote by voting for a 3rd aprty candidate until we do.
