It depends upon their social group and the 'expecation' of the social group they are in. Alcoholics don't see other alcoholics as losers, while those who have quit drinking, or never had a problem with it, do see them as 'failures'.

The expectation of others is, at best, a rough guideline to behavior, since the circumstances of a person's life could contain events that people, who do not have those incidences, don't have to deal with: consequently, their expectation of what to expect from another is 'skewered'.

A speed reader raises the expecation of others but that doesn't mean that it is reasonable to do so. A slow reader would be just as frustrated trying to speed read as a speed reader would be trying to read slowly. And trying to make one do the other not only results in 'failure' but usually a double misunderstanding; by the person doing the expecting and the person to whom the expecation is given.

So it helps to understand what are the 'expectations' in a given situation, and how 'reasonable' they are. What might be 'reasonable' to some would be completely unreasonable and unobtainable to others. And negative reinforcement (calling someone who fails a loser) rarely produces the intended result: often it brings about the exact opposite.

So if you, or someone you know, is a 'loser', try to take it easy on them. Perhaps a re-evaluation of the criteria used is necessary to understand whether or not the expectation is achievable.

any time the person loses. forgive yourself and others, because everyone is a loser in life at some point. everyone experiences losses. if it is your friend, try to help them. they need help. if it is you, stay positive and be good to yourself.
