The cell phones here are top notch! I want to bring one back with me when I go to Canada but I'm not sure if I'm able to choose any provider when I get back and sign up for a plan.

Also, when you register an unlocked GSM phone on a plan is it still considered unlocked or are you bound to that provider from then on?

There is a very good change your device should work. As long as it is unlocked you should have no problems with voice services. Quad-band is also good to have since most North American carriers use 1900 MHz.

For text and picture messaging you would need to configure your device. Contacting the carrier they would be able to provide you with steps on configuring these based on their network settings. You may have to refer to your user manual for information on editing these settings.

WAP/GPRS service would also have to be manually configured. However, I don't recommend GPRS in Canada because we have awful plans for data. But, if you don't mind paying $15-$30 per MB for data, then go for it.

Overall, you should have no problems using a GSM carrier in Canada. Also be sure to visit www.gsmworld.com for more info on GSM service in Canada. Just click on GSM Roaming on the top and select Canada.

You did no longer say the place you're traveling from. while you're from North united statesa., you could be sure that your telephone is a minimum of a triband telephone. In NA you need to purchase a twin band, triband, or quadband telephone. North American cellular structures use the 850/1900 MHz bands, on a similar time as the the remainder of the international often use 900/1800 MHz. A NA dualband telephone in basic terms operates interior the NA bands, so taking it to the Philippines could be ineffective. A triband telephone could perform in between the three band, so which you would be ok there. Quad band could be maximum suitable on account that the two worldwide bands could be available.

The plain answer: Yes
If it has quad-band, and is unlocked, then it will, 100% work in Canada.
When you register for a plan, you can still switch SIM cards when ever you want
