i'm 23 and the neurosurgeon i'm seeing has recommended this procedure to correct a severely damaged disc(from a traumatic injury) in my lower back that is causing debilitating pain...will i ever be able to return to running, cycling, and weight lifting? conservative treatment over the past 7 months is not providing any relief, so this may become my last option

Surgery is not always the answer to disc problems. I would advise a second or third opinion. If it is true you have a disc problem, weighlifting is not for you anymore. Running and cycling would still probably be alright.
