Use of coal to absorb moisture ?

while cleaning the trunk of the car , i found two pieces of coal at each side in some hidden cornered area .
some people told me these are for absorbing moisture .
if not what is the use of 2 pc.s of coal in the trunk , to avoid dust forming ???

Charcoal used to be the product of choice for keeping odors down in refrigerators. Now it is baking soda.

more than likely just fell out of an open bag of charcoal and wasn't retrieved.
