Is there any other way things can be purchased through the internet besides using a credit, debit, or a checking account?

I would suggest using a prepaid Visa or MasterCard. Even if someone were to get you card number, they could only spend what you have prepaid and no more. I believe that Visa now has gift cards that work like credit cards and can be purchased for different amounts and can be purchased at most banks. These two methods are probably the best way to go because your personal information can't be obtained either.

Some sites have an option of sending a money order or a check. Not all of them do though. You'll have to read there policies. Some even take a check over the phone. You give them your account info and they will make an automatic draft.
Paypal requires a checking or credit card to even have an account.

Yep. Paypal, which is kind of a "middle man". I trust that bullshit less than I trust a direct pay method that you mentioned. If you are paranoid about your security, you would be better off using a credit card. You have some manner of insurance against fraud with a CC. Involves some paperwork, but ultimately if someone somehow uses your info to spend your credit, you can fight it with very limited liability.

Why?

If you're buying something from a store [like walmart, target, etc] you usually can use a giftcard.
