Don't use bug spray until you identify what bug it is. Otherwise all you will do is give your dog cancer, and not even kill the bugs. You could Google "garden insect identification" and the name of your state, or get a book called "insect, Disease and Weed i.d. Guide." from Rodale. Til then, just a blast of water should do it, or knock them into soapy water by hand.

Disyston is a systemic insecticide. Sprinkle it around the drip line of the gardenia and water in. The plant will become poisonous to any bug that bites it. sold at nurseries, good for all plants in and outside. Stinks, but is very effective.

Also consider fertilizing your gardenia with Epsom salts, cheap alternative to acid based fertilizers.

Get an empty spray bottle, and positioned some water in it... then drizzle purely slightly of liquid dish-washing cleansing soap in it... swirl it around slightly... yet attempt to no longer make varied bubbles. Spray it on the gardenias. I try this 2 or thrice a year to do away with aphids and white flies. Its risk-free on your plant too....

A natural product known as BT, Dipel or Thuricide attacks worms (caterpillars) and is very narrow-spectrum in toxicity (even safe on veggies). It's probably not that effective on grasshoppers though. Read the label.
