id like to agree that rusk is a sweet goaltender although he isnt in the nhl yet. pogge will be good...but he cant play for toronto...they seem to do something bad to every goalie that comes their way. i mean they've had their fair share...but look at belfour now...and curtis joseph...and now calder trophy winner raycroft too.
i believe the best up and comer in the nhl is henrik mundqvist..or backup to marty turco mike smith. smith has about 10 wins in 13 games played..and 3 shutouts. simply amazing.

Backstrom is no slouch, either.
Goaltending is a precipitous position. On a great team, a merely "above average" goalie becomes a saint. (Look in the dictionary under Legace)
On a bad team, even an exceptional goalie becomes a sieve. (Look in the dictionary under Kolzig)
In watching some of these "newly impressive" goalies, have you noticed how many "spectacular saves" they have made? As impressive as some of those saves have been, my 25 years of experience as a goalie tell me that some of them would not have been nearly as spectatular if the goalie had merely been in proper position in the first place. Time has a way of catching up with such goalies. Usually sooner rather than later.
But alas, keeping the puck out of the net is really all that matters. So, if reflexes can overcome your lack of positioning skill it will take more than 20 - 30 - 40 games to prove that you can keep it up.
I am not saying that Smith, Backstrom, Harding and Fleury are not the goalies of the future, but lets not place artifically high expectations just yet.
Research the careers of Jim Carey (96 Vezina Trophy winner) and Jose Theodore (02 Vezina Trophy winner).
Here is the Carey story, if you missed it: http://members.tripod.com/~mscapsfan/carey0700.html

Harding will be an awesome goaltender, no doubt. But Kari Lehtonen could also be considered the next great goaltender as well as he has done an awesome job for Atlanta.
Down on the farm, Tuukka Rask of the Boston Bruins and Al Montoya of the New York Rangeres are 2 goalies you need to keep an eye on in the future.

Goaltenders are impossible to predict. I don't think he will be a starter for someone next year. He is #3 on his own teams depth chart for God's sake and belongs in the minors, where he will probably be again next year-it is 2 or 3 games man. Minnesota can make goalies look good with their style of play.
Like someone said look at Jim Carey or Theodore. Oullet and Pelletier were supposed to be the next Roy's. Who, you say? Exactly. Cam Ward has taken a step back. Look at CuJo-undrafted.
As for Pogge and Rask-I'll reserve judgement-they look good as youngsters.
Any GM who drafts a goalie in the first 2 rounds should be shot.

the next great goalie will be Carey Price. property of the Montreal Canadiens.
Joe S>>>>>>Eddie Belfour was **** for the past 4 years and he should retire, and Cujo what a joke. the Leafs want after old farts. Belfour best years was with the Blackhawks yes he won the cup with the Stars but the Stars had offencive power and when i did like Cujo his best years where actually with the St-Louis Blues he made it fun to watch the playoffs. then he got traded and then after the Oilers he became a greedy player only played where the money was and if he didn't why the hell he left Toronto cause they didn't offer him enough that's why. but then the both go to Toronto and the Toronto media makes it like they where gods which there not.
ilovepad…>>>>why do people keep saying Ryan Miller he hasn't even reach a great goalie status and i don't think he ever will.
GO HABS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

All these guys mentioned will be great in about 2-5 years. But right now, the young goalie I would like to have is Mike Smith. He is one of the hottest goaltenders in the league at this point of the season and has a GAA under 2.00

Yeah thats pretty sweet and everything but actually the next great goaltender is already playing in the NHL.
Marc-Andre Fleury...
hes amazing. he can only improve with time but MANY have said he is the next Patrick Roy and I am very proud to say that I have met him and I had a conversation with him.
Just bragging..sorry.
hah.
but no Josh Harding sounds like he's pretty great.

Either Josh Harding or Niklas Backstrom. They both showed they can step it up. They are both amazing goalies and someday will be starting in net for a great team. But fernandez is still great... when he isnt injured....
