Pretties is sort of freaky; Specials is even more so (the 3rd book). I have read the first two and am working on the third. I've enjoyed the series. Here's what happened in the first:
When you turn 16, you get an operation, and you are changed from an Ugly to a Pretty. Everyone is considered ugly until this point. The cities have done research on "the look", so everyone is beautiful but they look similar. Their beauty makes those around them feel good. Also, when you're a Pretty, your job is to party and have fun.
In the first book, Tally's best friend (Peris) has already turned Pretty and she is alone. She meets up with another girl (Shay) that shares her birthday. Shay decides she wants to run away - she doesn't want to spend her days "pretty". She wants to live freely.
Tally decides not to run away with her, but when she goes in for the operation she is given a choice: stay ugly or go find your friend and expose "The Smoke", the area where runaways are living on their own.
I find the society interesting. When everyone is pretty, they can be controlled. Some, like Tally, like to have other kinds of fun, doing tricks and riding hoverboards. The kids speak their own language - bubbleheads, staying icy, and they are very fashion conscious, wearing flash tattoos and using bungee jackets.
At the end of Uglies, Tally decides to turn Pretty in order to learn more about what this does to people, so after some adventures (without saying too much), she turns herself in. This is where you picked up.
I think the entire series is pretty good. I saw people recommending it here, so I checked into it, and am glad I did. They tried to create a utopia, but in the end, human nature wins out.

It's a sorta science fiction book for middle school kids.
Everyone born is told they are "ugly" and they all wait until they turn 16 years old when they can have an operation that will turn them pretty.
The story follows the "uglies" as they play tricks on others and get into trouble and wait around until the day they turn 16 and can have their operation.
It is the first book in a trilogy. I think its a good book for kids who focus too much on looks and don't look at what is inside a person.

Wouldn't it be just as easy for you, if not easier, to look it up on Amazon or Barnes&Noble or Borders or even Google? Or how about the library? In some ways, I just do not understand this website and the questions people ask.
