Depending on the song, but it might be because you are alone and long for what the person is singing about.

Love songs can make you depressed because they can bring back old memories of when you were with an ex-spouse, or an event that had happened during a dance or any event that happened and that particular song just happened to be on at the time, Or maybe you had a crush on a person and there was a particular song that would always remind you of that person.

Through the course of our lives we all experience the pain of loss and 'love songs' can potentially stir those feelings up...especially if there's something about the song with which you are associating the person/situation. Music in general evokes emotion in everyone.

You got to remember though, some "love songs" are usually full of sad drippy over-exagerated sentiments which can trick you into feeling overly nostalgic. It's the full intent of the artist to tap into your emotions with both the melody and words - otherwise they wouldn't have any sales. Don't forget, misery loves company.

Btw, notice the many advertising campaigns which use the same strategy (evoking emotion) to sell a product or service - they strike right at the heart, or a vulnerability, as a stimulus to get consumers to buy what they're selling.

If love songs make someone depressed, it could be their relationship or lack of one, or, it could be
that the song is about a perfect, unattainable love which doesn't exist.
