Elements with similar properties fall into similar groups (vertical columns). Elements in the group also have similar valence shell configurations.
Elements in a period have trends in atomic radius and ionization potential. Quite interestingly, but very easy to prove using a simple equation in quantum mechanics that is actually taught to high school chemistry students, as you move down the row starting on the very left, the atomic radius decreases due to the fact that the valence electrons are on the same shell in each period. And as you move to the right, you add more electrons on that shell which causes the force between the nucleus and that valence shell to increase which brings in the shell, hence making the atom smaller.
