I guess they say those things are bad for all. So , yeah probably not the best for baby or you.
What you are referring to is gestational diabetes. (the big baby part) The baby "can" get too much sugars. This could complicate your delivery. This can also be obtained from too much starchy foods and high carbs. So simply being healthy minded is good.
HOWEVER, everything in moderation is fine - unless you doctor says to take it off your list.
What pregnant woman doesn't need a little icecream in the middle of the night?
Listen to your doctor and you'll do fine.
Good Luck and Contrats.

A constant sugar overload puts you at higher risk for gestational diabetes, which in turn, will put you at a higher risk for diabetes later on. Diabetes may not necessarily make the baby 'big' but could cause growth-restriction, meaning you will gain the full 30-35lbs recommended (maybe more) but have a low-birth weight baby (under 5lbs). That can cause problems with breathing, heart rate, and the baby not being able to retain warmth after birth until he/she bulks up.
It can also cause problems like heart palpitations for you,and if you develop diabetes, you can be put on bed-rest and have a much higher risk of going into labor early and even having a heart attack or seizure during a natural delivery. This is what almost happened to me 2 years ago.
Low-fat ice cream has the same amount of calcium as full-fat ice-cream (and that's good for both of you) and, if you must, drink *uncaffinated* clear sodas. Good luck.

it's sugar that makes your baby big. I had to avoid sugar primarily because I'm tiny and I didn't want to get a c-section. (it wasn't the risk of getting diabetes for me)
Everything in moderation and let your doctor know. I avoided soda but sometimes I craved it. I drank the diet version to avoid the calories. If you eat ice cream, then at least get the really good ice cream that made from natural ingredients. It's more expensive, but they taste better anyways. The ones with alot of sugar are the cheap brands. Just read the ingredients on the box =)
My baby came out 7 lbs, 11 oz

Actually, it's really bad for anyone to eat ice cream and drink soda, but we do it anyway because it taste so good! That said, it won't kill you or the baby, but you should try to limit your intake of junk food. The baby needs more nutritious foods. As far as the soda goes, it probably contains caffeine. Caffeine gets you all revved up, so you know that it does the same thing for your baby. They key to healthy eating during pregnancy(and @ all times for that matter) is moderation.

If your doctor has mentioned that you have, or are at risk of developing gestational diabetes, then you need to avoid sugar as much as possible as this can lead to a larger baby. The baby is unable to remove the sugars from their body, and your body doesn't remove it efficiently either.
If the soda has caffeine (and a lot do not just colas) then the caffeine can not be removed from the babies body either. So it is best to keep caffeine drinks to a minimum.
For your own well being, so that you do not put on too much weight, it is also best to watch your diet, and not indulge in too much junk. But this is the same in everyday life anyway.

Well you want to keep it in moderation... but I drank some soda and ate ice cream during my pregnancy and did not have a large baby. It's not good for anyone to have alot of those things, whether you're pregnant or not. Way too much sugar!

I drank a lot of soda and ate chocolate and ice cream when I was pregnant, it seemed that I didn't gain too much weight, but when my baby was born she was quite big. My midwife told me to watch my sugar intake because a baby can gain about 1/2 a pound of fat per week towards the end.
Wish I'd listened to her!!!

I drank diet coke and ice tea all the time during my pregnancy with my son, I didn't hold back on the cake and ice cream at family birthday parties, there is at least 2 or 3 every month in my family not including my husband's side. Not even to mention my bridal shower cake and the wedding cake too. My son still came out the weight my dr estimated from about 4-5 months. 8Lbs 8oz.

Well I am 34 weeks pregnant, I try to not drink soft drinks very often, but I do need to learn how to lay off iced tea hah.. As far as the ice cream, I also try not to have too much of that so I won't be putting too much sugar into my system so it won't overload the baby :)

well if you drink soda rule of thumb drink clear soda all others have caffeine, and you don't want to gain so much weight by eating too much junk, you will regret it after the baby comes, soda and ice cream will fill you up and leave no room for healthy food, just be responsible, it will make you feel like crap if your diet is mostly junk,
