You "freaked out" and experienced a vagal response. It happens when you stimulate any of the vagas nerves. "The response includes a decrease in heart rate, blood pressure, a feeling of light- headedness (from the decreased blood pressure), and nausea. Vagal responses are caused by many things. They include suddenly getting up, pain, fear, excitement, immersion of the head in cold water, or stimulation of the coratid artery in the neck. Even going to the bathroom can cause the effect in some people."
Just relax and keep trying. You'll get it. Experiment with different brands and sizes---one is bound to work for you.

Don't listen to the girl about toxic shock syndrome, you didn't even wear the tampon long enough for that to occur!
As far as the sweating and light headedness, you were just nervous and aggrevated. The reason you probably couldn't get it in all the way is because you weren't relaxed. This is the main reason of lot of girls I knew as a teenager didn't use tampons. Try learning how to move and control those muscles down there by starting and stopping your urine when using the toilet, those are the same muscles. Next time you try insertion (with an empty bladder) push out muscles like you are starting to pee and at the same time insert it. Breathe out at the same instance you are pushing with those muscles. I find it easier to first put tampon in place and then push the inner applicator into the outer applicator and then push the entire applicator in and slightly towards my tailbone until the little ridges or rings on the outside of the applicator reach my skin/opening. Some tampon applicators like to stick together too, so with clean hands just move applicators in and out of each other a bit before insertion. It is not neccessary to push the tampon all the way in, just as far as the ridges is enough.
Don't be afraid to try it again next month, you're not going to hurt yourself or develop TSS, so get that out of your head. Read the pamphlet that came with the tampons for info on TSS, you'll find it's pretty rare if you follow the tampon manufacturers instructions.
Hope I've helped you, either that or totally grossed you out! Ain't it great being female?!! Ha, Ha! Good Luck!
P.S. If your flow is really light you should try the slender/light flow made for teens, most brands offer this type, especially tampax.

It was probably your nerves. There is such a thing called toxic shock syndrome, but that would not happen unless you left the tampon in for an extended period of time. When you put in a tampon, make sure you use the plastic applicator with the rounded edge (my favorite is playtex easy glide) and stick it in, and aim a little towards your butt when you are inserting it. Once it is in almost all the way in, (the top part, not the bottom part that you push) push in the lower piece to actually insert the tampon and slowly pull the plastic part out. Just keep trying because everyone is different. It took me forever to get a tampon in properly and I always felt so stupid, but it just takes some practice. Good luck!!

You are right to be concerned. Your symptoms could very well be anxiety. Experiment the inserting of tampons when you don't have to rush out the door (like on a weekend or day off). The more familiar you become with the use of tampons, the more your confidence will soar & you will be free of anxiety concerning this issue.

I know the feeling...my daughters use a plastic applicator like the Playtex pearl... they swear by them... try also on a heavy day or don't wipe to much so that there is enough there to slide the applicator in...just don't forget to wash your hands... once you master the way to use them you WONT want to use a pad again... good luck

Put a small amount of lubricant on the exterior of the applicator or the very tip of the tampon: it will work. This happened to me when I first tried to use them. You were having an anxiety problem; calm down.

I would say it was frustration & nerves.
I find it's better & more comfortable to just go with a pad on light days.
Good luck next time

I had the same problem when I used them for the first time. Just try again when your flow is heavier.
