Without question. If you only get your news from Fox or your local newspaper, you're missing a lot of what's really happening on the globe. Consider how quiet the average newspaper is about Iraq; even though many Iraqi civilians are killed by violence on a daily basis and our troops are constantly in danger from attack, newspapers often present just a sprinkling of such stories, and when they do, too often they are tucked on page 13 or somewhere. Yet, Anna Nicole Smith's death is obsessed over for weeks. This is the consequence of having a media that is severely centralized by corporate ownership. Did you know that five huge corporations own all of the major TV news stations? That's right. The NBC stations are owned by GE, an electrical and industrial company; CBS is owned by Viacom; ABC is owned by Disney; the Fox stations are owned by News Corporation; and massive Time-Warner owns all of the CNN stations.

My sister lives out there, she says that if she wants to know what is really going on she has to put on BBC news 24 or one from Germany that she likes.

I'm not sure that American news doctoring is entirely sinister, it is just that people do watch the news that shows the more dramatic pictures or hits on controversial even if to make the story work they have to miss out a part that would make what they are saying rediculous. Viewing figures are more important than the truth.

Our commercial news is like that too. Every week, they show a story, saying it as if it is new breaking news, then say they have a special program based on that the same evening. It is obvious that this other program took weeks to put together, so this 'breaking news' was nothing more than advertising for their own show.

I lived in America for five years and my main grouse was the with the major news networks who did not report anything international unless it had US interest woven into it. I was desperate for news from around the world and the only channel attempting to deliver it was PBS. The news delivered is filtered and perhaps it is because the content has to attract advertising -- the lifeblood of American television.

'Filtered' is tricky term. Although foreign news might get relayed through gov you have to realize our gov really dont censor information on web or sattelite TVs and other media format. You can go on Al Queda website if you want or watch Aljazeera through satellite TV and no one will bother you really.

There is no doubt the Bush administration know how to play 'media game', but it's far from countries like China where you could go to jail and die for sending email containing censored information.

You might be right we're not getting all the info, but if you really want them you're free to seek them out.

I would say that our gov do sometime try to steer your views, but they won't exactly kick you out of driver's sit.

America isolated from the rest of the Arab world? America last time I looked was many thousand of miles removed from the Middle East geographically, and was never considered to be part of the Arab lands, since they can hardly be a world since we all share the same one. And you can see whatever you wish to see, just by clicking on any link that is news related. And if you learn new languages you can see all the propaganda that passes for "news" around that world, so don't be collecting your news just in America, or Arabia, or anywhere else for that matter, globalise your news searches. Did you know that in England, some dodgy fool in government, wants to make it possible that auditors from the Inland Revenue, or Tax Department, to be able to enter a persons house to inventory their possessions and tax them on it? Or else charge that person $2500 for non-compliance. Pretty cool huh? Did you know that in Queensland, Australia, the state government yesterday passed into law, a maximum allowance for water usage, as Australia is right now, in the middle of it's worst drought on record. Repeated non-compliance with these new restrictions, will initiate fines and follow-up visits by water auditors, who will have the right to enter a persons premises, so as to ascertain water usage. Fine for non-compliance will be $150 per diem. Same law, different applications. Bet that wasn't in any of your "news" media outlets, in fact it wasn't given much coverage in either the UK or Australia. Once implimented do you think that it won't happen in the USA? Or somewhere else? Of course it will. And when you see it happening, you'll be able to tell your friends that you found out about it here on Yahoo Answers first. News isn't just from the fifth estate you know, it is up to all of us in this international community to keep each other up to date about the going-ons in our respective parts of the world. I was shocked to find out that in countries like Kashmir and Syria, that private connection to the internet is illegal, and that people who have access are usually the last people in either country you want to chat with. Can you imagine not having access to the internet? In most western countries computers are part of a libraries must have equipment list, and the access is free, so that people without home access or travellers, can keep in contact with the rest of the world. So it's not just the American government "filtering" what news they wish you to hear or see, it's all governments. Stop asking redundant questions that were answered years ago, get out and explore your world and see it for what it is, a big beautiful place with despotic men and women everywhere who wish to keep you ignorant. Stop them by chatting with everyone from everywhere, and find out what the average person thinks, and if that is not the truth of the matter then re-educate them.

The government ? Only the liberal Democrats are saying we have too much free speech . Republicans want us to run our own lives -but the Democrats always want to "help" : translates to -DICTATE our lives and tax us for the "privilege"..
We really need to be on guard now that it's not just a joke anymore - Hillary & the libs are complaining about the fact that we have too much free speech . Besides the Internet-they want to eliminate talk radio , as well .

Just the same way every country in the world 'filters' what it wants the population to hear.

Yes of course all our news is filtered. and of course we all know it. But I'm always amazed by the rubbish news fed to people in other countries by their governments and how they accept it word for word.
