Are you suggesting it because of the low number of recent volunteers in the military, or are you thinking about trying to change the behavior and attitudes of the younger generation? Personally, I don't think military service is necessarily a bad thing. However, I do have my doubts as to the places our soldiers have been sent to in the last two decades or more. Also what about the teen aged felons? Or the conscientious objectors? Also would you have the gov't induct females? Perhaps full citizenship would only be given to people who have served in the military?

I don't think it will happen but if it did it would most likely make us a better nation.
One of my sons was a punk skate boarder with no direction in life. He joined the Air Force and he got a great education..he matured. He was focused. It was great for him. He still had his unique personality.
It is the best thing that ever happened to him.
I don't think some kids in our country could surrive boot camp. but, then maybe that is what they need to grow up and be responsible.

Europe is rethinking that. It's expensive. Over in Europe the choice was a year in the military or a year in social services like taking care of the elderly. It is a budget buster. Having said that, maybe you can see why the system in America is the way it is so we can have stealth weapons.

We would lose whatever strength and advantage this country has left for being a nation of innovators. So far, we're the country with the most Nobel Prizes, the most books published, the most music written. We export our culture, invent the computer and the internet, and send men to the moon. You stop talented young people dead in their tracks for two years when they are on course towards being scientists, nurses, dancers and football players, and this country would be much poorer as a consequence.
The collective talents of our youth should not be overlooked; they're a vital resource to our country. We should be supporting and nurturing the talents of all our young people and encouraging them to serve their country through what they do BEST, not what we deem fit for them to do. In the case of clcalifornia's son, the Air Force helped him to discover his direction. Meanwhile, my 19-year old daughter has already spent a lifetime preparing to become a professional dancer through countless hours of sweat and determination. She knew about responsibility at 12 years old when she started attending summer training programs (8 hrs of dancing, 6 days/wk) away from home.
Keep in mind, our country has used such methods as cultural exchanges (eg. sending dance companies to perform in Cuba) and athletic competitions (eg. "ping-pong" diplomacy with China) to initiate contact with hostile countries, so don't sneeze at the contributions that performers can make to our foreign affairs.
