1) Reduce the number of programs you run. Turn off any functionality you don't need (such as Bluetooth). Choose "maximum battery" or similar modes in power management, which lowers the CPU clock frequency and screen brightness.

2) Buy a new battery. See if you can also upgrade the battery (such as from 4-cell to 6-cell).

3) Reduce the number you recharge it. On ever recharge it loses a small percentage of capacity, regardless of the time of recharge. So if possible, don't recharge until it's about to run out of power. Use the battery sparely. I typically remove mine from the laptop when the AC power is plugged in.

Other than trying not to run too many programs at one time, keeping your speakers low, and lowering the screen's brightness, there's not a whole lot you can do.

If it's an older laptop, you may want to see about getting a new battery, as batteries tend to lose their ability to keep a charge as they age.

There are special tools, however, that can change some settings that'll increase battery life by changing the amount of electricity that flows through the motherboard of your laptop, however using this software can be VERY risky, and can very easily damage your laptop, and it will not be repairable. I suggest NOT looking for this software, unless you don't mind running the risk of turning your laptop into a brick.
