I can't remember the page, but did anyone else notice that in this book, when Slughorn (was that his name?) was talking to Harry, he asked about his friend Rupert. Was this a goof, referring to Rupert Grint, or is there a character named Rupert in the book??

Slughorn never pays much attention to anyone who he deems to be unimportant. When Slughorn asks about "Rupert", he is clearly referring to Ron. Slughorn simply forgot Ron's name, even though Ron almost died in his classroom. That is the level of Ron's importance in Slughorn's eyes.

I personally believe (as others do) that the use of the name "Rupert" was intentional. It may have been a nod by J.K. Rowling to Rupert Grint, the actor who plays Ron in the movies.

It wasn't a mistake, JKR was just highlighting that Professor Slughorn didn't even know Ronald's name. Slughorn calls Ron "Ralph" in addition to Rupert,-definitely not a mistake Ronald and Rupert are quite similar sounding and she is making a point of Slughorn to continue to get Ron's name wrong to show how little he doesn't think much of Ron's wizarding skills.

I think it was done on purpose b/c he didn't know rons name..harry was obviously slughorns favorite & ron..not so much..so it was most likely done on purpose to show the reader that slughorn didn't really know ron or even cared about him as much as harry...hope that answers your question!

No, no, he says Rupert because that shows that he doesn't care about Ron at all, in contrast to Harry whom he adores. He is looking to befriend people he think will have power, and apparently he doesn't think Ron will amount to much, so he doesn't think his name is worth remembering.

I believe it is of no coincidence and he easily called him Rupert instead of Ron or Ronald.Remember he had ignored his father and Ron.Both were not in the Slug Club.

Doesn't he say "Rubeus," in reference to Hagrid? Because Slughorn is aware of their close relationship.

Nah, I'm sure that didn't happen. I'm sure J.K. Rowling doesn't bother to learn the names of the actors that play her characters...who has the time? LOL!
