My friend has been at this new firm for five months and still does not have an actual job. She just trains for another's position, and replaces them for the required term, then trains for another and replaces them. This is not through a temp agency and this type of position was not discussed at hire. She was permantly, full time employed. She was offended by being called 'the relief' after all this time.
Any suggestions or experiences you have will be appreciated.

She sounds talented, and gawd how I'd love to have a person like that on my team. I once gave myself my own title, because technically I was the receptionist, but I kept taking on more and more duties. And anyone that asked was told I was the "office princess" it got a good laugh and people got the point.

I also met a person once who's official title was VP of Everything Else.

Tell her if it really bugs her, she can create her own title of Office Goddess. People will get a good laugh, and she can get the point across that she'd like to be called something else.

There is no way she was permanently full time employed if she is with a temporary agency. That only happens when the company hires her and she no longer works for the temp. agency. if this is the case then she should ask what happened, did someone come in off the street and get her permanent, hired from the temp. agency job or did someone come back from sick leave or maternity leave? doesn't sound right. She reslly shouldn't complain, she'd getting to know all the positions and one will open up before long and she will be ready for any one of them right? So, what is in a title, a rose is still a rose. Get over it, take the money and the training and wait it out.

She needs to go to her manager and suggest a name for her 'position'. I have heard of companies in the UK renaming job titles. It may not get her a raise, but it will give her peace of mind and perhaps some respect. They are usually willing to go along with anything that is not going to cost them more money.

As for a title, how about:

Professional Understudy
Replacement Specialist
Special Representative
Office (or other) Specialist
Resource Officer or Facilitator

Try like Blockbuster video store, my daughter use to work for them and they are pretty good, they will move you up pretty fast. Of course she worked other jobs and already had manager experience, but you still could get to be a manager by working hard.

They do have benefits and what not so it is pretty good. Good luck. And never give up!! There is room for advancement with the job, so remember that.

Oh yea, I almost forgot. NO there is never any thing wrong with wanting to do better and be able to have a title. Titles can be good.
