I totally connect with your question. I moved here from another country when I was 14 and even then at a younger age, I noticed how everyone was such in a constant hurry. It was a big deal for someone to give up their own time to help out someone, or show up for something, or even just to have lunch with them. I really don't know the answer but my "theory" is that Americans are very self-centered in that my business is my business and I'm the only one I can count on to take care of it. So, if I had a kid at daycare, I have to pick up my kid from daycare because she's my kid - it doesn't matter if a friend of mine who lives in the same area has a kid that goes to the same daycare because she might think it's a big hassle or she asks me the same thing - I think it's a hassle. So really if I do it my way, I have to pay with the time that I lose by not being open about other possibilities. Also, here in the USA, you have to do everything yourself. You're lucky if you have someone who takes their share of the load. In other countries, house-helps are ubiquitous and they make life so much easier. I don't know - something about the States - it's too high-strung and individualized

They have a big economy to operate, but the US population is as small as 300 million. Workload per person is quite big.

Because Americans have a lot of things in their hands which also means that they have a very short attention span.
