>Where Are The Real Clients?
The best clients are with the best SEOs.
You have to remember that as well as thousands of bad clients there are tens of thousands of bad SEOs selling their so called SEO services.
Unfortunately 99.999% of people who call themselves SEOs couldn't SEO themselves out of a paper bag :) They read a few things on the Internet like the importance of keyword density (which is a load of crap) and then set themselves up as an SEO expert.
Don't believe me - then just look at their websites.
If they can't SEO their own websites to rank in the first 3 for the keywords in their own business what client with any brains or money is going to believe they can do it for their business?

I have to disagree with the first answer. Good SEO definitely is an investment, and it's an ongoing one. Algorithms change often, and your competitors are constantly working on their SEO too. So there's no magic answer. I'd say your best bet is to work with a firm that offers a monthly retainer, or hire someone in house, depending on the level of importance SEO has to your company. Also, I would never work with a firm that offers web design and SEO. SEO and web design are changing often, and I've found that most web designers do not have sufficient SEO knowledge -- generally outdated knowledge.

Here is where I found found the best SEO clients.
1. To go along with someone else's answer SEO optimizing my own site and use PPC advertising to drive traffic to my site. I use highly targeted terms that are easier to rank for and have a better possibility of someone who is looking to buy.
2. I got involved with my local chamber of commerce. This was an excellent way to network and meet all kinds of clients.
3. AND MOST POWERFUL - I partnered with existing web design companies who had a large client base that was already asking them for SEO. Since they didn't provide this themselves it was easy to work together to help provide their clients with what they where looking for. This makes the customer happy and the web development company happy. The clear benefit here is that you do not have to do ANY advertising. The web design firm does all the selling for you.
(You better be sure you really know what your doing. Good business is standing behind your work. Although there are no garuntees with SEO)

This is becoming a major issue with many of the freelancers. This need to be taken care by some federal or international agencies, as it is affecting the effort and hardwork of people round the globe. It is high time to raise voice against these kind of mishaps.
I am sorry buddy, we wont able to refer you to a site, which is very genuine and gives information about real/genuine clients. These fake clients should be made aware about Black hat techniques which might affect their site and would not have any voice if they understand the consequences of fooling SEO specialists.

Well, most of your traffic(clients) comes from search engines if you have good SEO to your site. For example: if you do not have good seo optimization you will have "clients" only from the persons you know or from other blogs or something else where you talk with others about your website.
http://www.webcodes.info/
If you have good seo optimization to your site ( meaning good keyword density and decent amount of backlinks ) your site will be displayed on the search engine results so clients will start to arrive.
What I am trying to say is that...with SEO it is easier to take clients from the search engines directy than from other ways.
If you have a website... and you optimized it... the result will be visible only after 6-8 months.Mean while try to have as much of backlinks as possible and to submit your page to the free web directories for the begining. That is the start in my opinion.Talk with other webmasters and ask them for a link exchange. It will be good for your site importance, because the number of the backlinks defines the importance and the keyword density defines the relevance of a website.
( example : http://www.webcodes.info/contact.htm )
And by the way : no SEO company can guarantee no1 ranking on a search engine !

Have you tried walking down your own mainstreet and talking with your local businesses? How about your local business groups (Chamber of Commerce)? Our own work comes mostly from our clients contacts these days. If you have been in business for a while ask yourself why you don't get more referral work from your customers.
I think many people expect all good things to come from the Internet. Just because this is where our work is done doesn't mean it has to be our only point of contact. Think outside the web to find more work.

My son is an SEO expert. I found him his first client. I am an artist and was working on renovation on a church here in Dallas. My client wanted to lease the church for weddings, but knew nothing about the Internet. I told him about my son and got them together. My son worked on a commission basis for 6 months, and then my client and he came to an agreement for $2500 for my son's services if my client sold the church. My client sold the church and paid my son.
So, I think the answer is "Word of mouth."

After one months when i sent the report and invoice for payment....i haven't received any reply from him for a week...after much hue and cry and received a mail from that Client that"He is NOT satisfied so dont wanted to pay anything". I was stumped...he made me Fool....
But that was a big lesson for me...
