Maybe its 'the kind of rodent with mites or fleas.."
Sometimes you can purchase a bad batch of bedding that has a mite infestation.
I would change his bedding (go buy a new bag) and clean the pen really good.
Then call your vet and ask if there is something you can treat him with. Its worth a try!

I think there are many animals who might show this type of behavior if they get depressed or sick. I don't think this usually happens because of loneliness, although that may be a possability. Most often, I've heard of animals chewing on their own fur due to some type of malnutrition when they're not receiving enough of a vitamin or mineral that they need.

This is an entirely different type of circumstances, but we used to have a mouse and a gerbil who lived together and one day we looked into the cage and realized that one of them (we have no idea which) chewed all of the fur off of the gerbil's tail. We're guessing that whichever one did it because they wanted for him to look more like the mouse (because mice have bald tails and gerbils don't), but it was never explained and he never had any fur on his tail after that until a while after the mouse died and we put a girl gerbil into his cage. (And in case anyone thinks I don't know, I'm quite aware that it's not usually a good idea to keep mice and gerbils together, but these two had to share a cage for a day in an emergency situation and they became such good friends so quickly that no one could bear to keep them apart after that)
