I'm going to Europe in May, and can go anywhere I want. But since I've never been anywhere outside of London and Paris, I was thinking it would be nice to go somewhere a little more unique. South of France? Scotland? Ireland? Portugal? Milan? Some small obscure village?

Any and all ideas welcome...any detail would be great. Thanks!!

For free? Rome, of course! I would do the big tour of Italy, Venice, Florence, Pisa, Rome, Neapel, ... 3 weeks minimum, with a 16-day Interrail ticket, ending with at least 5 days in Rome.

If Rome doesn't grab you though, you might want to visit Istanbul. Great city and definitely different. I was there last summer and I really enjoyed the Topkapi, the sun, the beach, the Hagia Sophia, the mosques, .....

Go to Prague. In fact I'm going there next Wednesday. It's a beautiful place with 1000 year old history, and rock and other concerts going on most of the time in springtime.
Another place I'd suggest is Sorento in Italy a beautiful place on the side of a mountain, close to Mt. Vesuvius, and city of Pompeii which got buried by the volcano 2000 years ago. You can also visit the Blue Grotto on one of the islands there.

I think Salzburg, Austria is very pretty and unique compared to the rest of the cities I visited in Europe. Travelled around Germany, Austria and Italy. Munich, Rome and Venice are the other cities that I liked. I hear Prague is quite pretty too... would love to visit someday. If you have lived in London or Paris, Milan may not be that attractive.

Prague is very nice in May, During the Prague spring the trees are flowering, music everywhere, easy to get to these days with discount air carriers in Europe. Oh, and its much safer than any of the places you mentioned especially for a single traveler.

I wud drive outta Stockholm, to a more remote area, the view is to die for.Away from traffic, crowds, perhaps head up north to see the Northern Lights. If i had to choose nother small village, i'd go to Santorini Islands. If u've been there b4 u'll know why...white buildings , bluish green sea..heavenly!

in case you % to holiday on a low funds, bypass to the smaller cities, especially those indoors the eastern eu international places, not the capital cities. undergo in concepts that this is raining or snowing particularly heavily, and that this is severe season for snowboarding and diverse winter events. So if low-fee is a call for, do not holiday to any of the mountainous aspects. And e book forward for the Christmas holiday era, it particularly is purely particularly shorter than you holiday.

I love the Pyanees mountain range between Spain and France and then you can end up at the ocean for the quaint little towns there.

Szeged, Hungary in the spring - It's beautiful, really inexpensive... and they have an amazing outdoor theatre.

Antibes, France - perhaps the most beautiful, best kept secret. Shhhh don't let too many people know.

I would go to Prague, because that city has a lot to offer, plus I have family in Czech Republic.
