take out the sim card from it and just put it in any cingular phone? or maybe one of those cheap pay as you go phones

Yes!! Aslong it is another CINGULAR MOBILE-
T-MOBILE----- YOU can go from POST PAID to PRE PAID.
I know for FACT that you can go from PRE PAID to POST PAID!!!!
I am in the PEOCESS of doin' with a NOKIA 3220 CAMMOBILE---- Switchin a T-MOBILE-TO-GO MOBILE to POST PAID in the next few days.

Yes, you can take the sim card out and put it in any cingular phone. Cingular has some interesting pay as you go phones/plans. If you don't use it much pay as you go can be good. It's $1.00/day plus $.15/min if you use the phone and $0 if you don't use it. That is unless you are calling someone else who has Cingular as well. Those calls don't cost you anything. It's the same as mobile to mobile...FREE!
