People talk about how blacks are thugs and criminals and ignorant yada yada yada. Isn't it ignorant to base your opinion of urban black on Hollywood?
People think they know something about black people because they watch television and videos. How ignorant is that? They think they are experts on urban blacks, whom they don't know because they saw something stereotypical on television. Who is more ignorant, the urban black or the person who bases their understanding on Hollywood?
Granted, they my not speak standard english, but they are not stupid nor ignorant. Unless you base ignorance on the language a person speaks, which is not what ignorant means, they are not ignorant. But is judging a people based on Hollywood ignorant?

Katie- what's hypocritical is calling them ignorant while judging them based on Hollywood, which is ignorant. But I guess you could make an argument for it being ironically hypocritical :D.

Katie- you don't sound offensive, just ignorant. How many of them do you actually know? Do white kids not display masculinity in school? Still got the blinders on eh? So be it. You are blinded by Hollywood as well because your perception is based on appearance rather than understanding. Wonders where the spiritual christians are???

judging people based on hollywoods randition of the world is ignorant..but not hypocritical.
however, i dont just see blacks being portrayed badly on televsion etc.
they portray themselves badly in life (ie the kids @ my school).
and if blacks dont want to be thought of as thugs and criminals and whatnot, they shouldnt do things or act certain ways to be thought of like that.
unfortunately, people dont want to hear rappers singing about good things. they wanna hear about how 50 got shot, or how many girls some guy did in one night.
talking about important or positive issues doesnt sell.
i was watching this documentary, and they were talking to some urban blacks, and even they were saying that this was wrong.
but i think one of the best ways to stand up against those racial stereotypes would be to first get the media to stop. protest, because its completely the media's fault that people have those opinions. and if the media changes, so will the people.
Also, the black culture is very difficult. for guys its all about masculenity. i see this within my school. each of them trying to be more "manly" than the other..and its stupid. they are becoming victims of their culture.
i dont want to sound offensive or racist, im just writing what i think and what i see.

People base alot of their views from Hollywood:
Must hate conservative christians
Southerners are hicks
Abortion is a good "constitutional right".
Guns are bad "not really a protected right"
separation of church and state is written somewhere in the constitution.
homosexuality is protected in the Constitution
A man has a right to euthanize his wife.
Need I say more?
Of course people hate "groups" of people .
Calling whites honkies and crackers is bad also.
blaming all white Americans for slavery (slavery has been in most countries of the world and whites have been slaves.
The American Indians are still not treated right.
Blacks in Darfur are slaughtered and inslaved by moslem blacks.
The world is nuts and doesn't want things done right, fair, and equal.
Yes people can be unfair.
Jesus loves you.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give it a 12.
I have lived in integrated neighborhoods for all of my adult life, by choice. I prefer to be around people of many different colors, cultures, and ethnicities. I have yet to see a neighborhood like those that are portrayed in the movies and on television. Even the super stereotyped cities like Chicago and Detroit, and Gary, Indiana, where there is a majority black population, do not have entire neighborhoods that collectively think and behave like that on a regular basis. Never, ever in my life have I "accidentally" ended up on the "wrong" side of town and had my life threatened by gang-bangers, rapists, drive-by's and "home-girls". I have been in almost every neighborhood in Chicago, including all-black neighborhoods, and a few of the "projects". I've gone into the stores, walked down the streets, talked to complete strangers. I've never even been insulted, let alone accosted. I've seen some shady things going on. Drug deals. Prostitutes. Fights. I've been "warned" about certain streets or houses by the people in those neighborhoods, because some gang thing was happening, or some drug thugs lived there, but even the neighbors avoided those streets, and I thought it was really nice of them to be concerned, and I told them so. I would do the same for them.
My husband and I drove to Detroit for the black ethnic festival one year. There were probably a million black people in the streets. I have to admit, hubby was a little nervous at first, but not nervous enough to leave. We probably looked like grains of salt in a bowl of pepper. It was fabulous. Not one person even stared at us funny. We were just people, enjoying the celebration of a beautiful culture, surrounded by beautiful people, eating amazing food, and partying with our brothers and sisters.
Yes, I've been invited to friends' houses in neighborhoods that were hostile to outsiders. My friends would meet me at my car, and we would stand outside for a bit and chat before going in the house. They would introduce me to their neighbors. And then it was fine. So what? When I was a kid, we lived in an all white neighborhood, and we "introduced" our black friends to the neighbors, too, because we didn't want our friends harassed by people who were suspicious of black people. We can't be responsible for how everybody thinks and feels, but we can learn to be diplomats and ambassadors of goodwill to everyone.
The truth is, if you think that you are going to get the true picture from Hollywood and the media, then you might as well stay home, lock your doors, and live in fear. For that girl who claims that the boys in her school act like the guys in the movies, did it ever occur to you that ALOT of kids try to mimic what they see in the movies, because they think it's cool? I'll bet most of those kids drop that act the minute they walk in the door at home, because mom and dad won't tolerate it. I know my friend Sandra did in high school. She was snapping her head and fingers all day, speaking slang, and acting bad, but when we got to her house after school, her mom wasn't having it. LOL.
