There is still a tie catergory in the NHL today, though.

It's not for ties it's for overtime losses or shootout losses. There are no ties in the NHL anymore.

There isn't one, it's 1 point for an "overtime loss".

But the real answer to your question is that the NHL is stupid. They need to either give 3 points for a regulation win, or just keep a won-loss record as in other sports.

Personally, I'd like to see the won-loss. You lose, you lose. In no other sport is this a problem, but I keep hearing 'You have to give a team something for the effort in making it to overtime". Absurd. If you think this way, why stop there? Why not 1 extra point for a first period tie, 2 for a second period tie, 3 for regulation, 4, for a shootout, 5 after the first shot in the shootout and so on? I mean if your Philadelphia and you've tied Buffalo after 1 period, you should get something for that, right?

its not a tie category its OTL means Overtime lost but you still get a point.

they should take out the stupid shootout cause this is a team sport and to make the big deference in the standings they should do what they do in Football (soccer) give 3 PTS to the winning team and a put back the ties like they had before.
cause when you look at football (soccer) there's allot of ties and if they only received 2 pts for the win teams like Man. U wouldn't look as dominate with the 2 pts system but with the 3 pts system it really shows you the teams that are more dominate in the standings and i believe the NHL will go to that within the next 10 years and the shootout will be gone for good.

The categories are: Win, loss, REGULATION TIE, and shootout loss. The reason they have the "regulation tie" category is because each team gets a point in the standings if the game is still tied at the end of regulation play.

Tie after the regulation is 1 pt for each team. If one of them score in OT , that team get additional 1 pt to the standing. If is tie in 4-4 , its shootout until side wins it.

ok people don't understand this question he means in box record for the team like 10-0-1-0, would be 10 wins, 0 losses, 1 over time loss and 0 ties...with that being explained he means since there is no ties why is the fourth section still there. i don't know the answer to it, my guess would be for comparison or it has changed in some places and others just haven't updated or something

Because the NHL used to have ties before the 2005-2006 season.

If you are asking about why teams are still 34-25-7, then I'm guessing it's just because a lot of websites haven't updated it yet. If you are talking about why teams are 34-25-0-7, then it beats me. People are lazy or maybe they are trying to be cost efficient, and they haven't gotten around to updating their NHL standings template?

There isn't. There is only a record for OT loss, which is worth a point. If you have an OT win, it goes into a win column. So if you look at someones record you don't know how many ties they were in.

You still get a point if you go to overtime, even if you lose. So that tie catagory is actually overtime loses, including shoot-outs
