If it is just regular surface dirt, you could try a lightly damp washcloth. I have done that with my own and had no problems at all, plus it rejuvenates the suded somewhat.

My mother always swore by corn meal for cleaning things that can't be washed in a washing machine. Rub some corn meal into the surface and let it sit for a little while, then use a brush to remove it. Since your shoes are black, I would recommend going lightly on the corn meal so you don't end up with pale patches on your shoes. You might want to try a small patch first, just to test it.

use a metal brush,,they sell them in the shoe department in most stores
