why would a guy who's been going out with you and whose conducts have implied interest, not compliment you directly?

Because he is gay and unsensitive. He needs to understand what it takes to love you and he must pay you comnpliments or your self esteem will stoop. Pay him compliments, and he will probably pay them back, but if he doesn't, I would dump him and tell him he has to respect you and treat you right, pay you compliments.

Come on, I know you, you deserve it!
