I have a debate about Universal Sufferage soon and I don't really quite understand it. Could someone out there help me?

p.s. Use words that are known to a teenager, ok?
p.p.s. I'm not cheating! but merely asking for "guidance" from others. OK?

Firstly you should correct your spelling, it is "suffrage" not "sufferage", remove the extra 'e' before 'r'.

"Universal Suffrage" means everyone's right to vote without distinction as to race, sex, belief, intelligence, or economic or social status. This would include right to participate in government, most often in a democracy. But this actually never happen. Take for example in US there are many foreigners and illegal immigrants, so they can't be allowed to vote. There are people who came from other countries but are still citizens of their own country so they are also barred from voting.

Sufferage means a movement by groups or organizations who work to gain the right to vote for those who do not have the right. Iraq just this past year was able to vote for the first time in many years because of Saddam Hussein's political rein was ended when he was arrested and imprisoned. Many people walked miles just to be able to vote for the first time in the election to elect their new leader .

Sufferage = right to vote. Universal = everyone.

So, Universal Sufferage refers to everyone being allowed to vote. Now, in most situations, that rarely happens. Children are excluded, as well as current felony prisoners. Other exceptions apply.

But the issue to be debated is probably where do the lines get drawn. Who is denied the right to vote, and why.
