Guild wars is very popular and does not require a monthly charge to play online as does world of warcraft. As far as a first person shooter halflife 2 deathmatch has been popular for a couple of years and is still a favorite of mine.

i dont know about you but fallingsand.com is a place that is kind of addicting if you are like me. you can also try lineflyer.com or linerider.com. i forgot which one so try both. its pretty cool.
