Because we have been all raised from school age being told it's a democracy and a "free country".
And I see that in most people around me, they would prefer to believe something that makes them feel safe then to see the truth which would make their world less safe and stable.
It's just like in the movie "Matrix", do you want the red pill or the blue pill? Most people choose the blue pill.
Here is an interesting quote from a matrix fan site:
"The question then is not about pills, but what they stand for in these circumstances. The question is asking us whether reality, truth, is worth pursuing. The blue pill will leave us as we are, in a life consisting of habit, of things we believe we know. We are comfortable, we do not need truth to live. The blue pill symbolizes commuting to work every day, or brushing your teeth.
The red pill is an unknown quantity. We are told that it can help us to find the truth. We don't know what that truth is, or even that the pill will help us to find it. The red pill symbolizes risk, doubt and questioning. In order to answer the question, you can gamble your whole life and world on a reality you have never experienced.

1. most Americans are not stupid, please!
2. however, democracy did not come about until the late 1700's, sorry.
and 3.
Amercians think that US is a democracy because it IS one- based on the constitution and bill of rights with the fact that US still is governed by state control(each state having it's own laws and voting accordingly) etc.
That's what truely makes it a democracy- the state control thing... they tried to curtail that when writing the constitution but a few of the old guys wouldn't stand for it - thank goodness, and so, we still have "democracy"!

Maybe because most of us aren't cynical enough to understand that the *rich guys* always hand-pick their pet suck-ups so that Their Guy wins no matter who we "vote for". If we could vote for anyone and everyone who tried to run for election, it would be one thing...
But in this day and age people look at you like they want to lynch you for even mentioning that Third Parties exist. Like they were to blame for Bush's *Daddy* buying Dubya his job, courtesy of a corrupt and partisan Supreme Court, and a *deliberately flawed* election system the second time around (as in Diebold handing out states like *party favors*).
Really. For the past 26 years and counting, ever since Reagan got in, it's been coming to this: the Rich Guys just want it ALL, as in everything, and screw the other, less-rich 90% of the population, poor or not, working or not. And that agenda includes either buying out the government entirely or bankrupting it, or both.
But of course, the Rich Guys own the Media too, so they can use the TV and the Radio Shock Jocks and all those Pet Celebrities to brainwash the ordinary people into a stupor. Simply put, if you flood people with enough trivial info about Anna Nicole Smith's dying, nobody will *care* about people (soldiers and non-combatants alike) getting butchered in Iraq, or about New Orleans's *continued* descent into rot and barbarity as the city gets selectively "rebuilt" and white-washed into a Theme-Park styled mockery of itself.
Nah man, screw the poor people and the soldiers, Anna Nicole's dead, boo hoo. -__- Sounds harsh as hell when you put it like that, but *that* is in fact how messed up we are, how screwy our priorities are, and it underscores *why* we are this way.
We've only been held hostage by the Corporatist, Cronyist Right for 26 years now. Stockholm Syndrome, wherein you identify with and sympathize with your captors and enemies, doesn't take *that* long to kick in, especially with the Media turning Donald Trump into a *hero* while whole cities and towns rot by the hundreds for want of decent jobs....
So yeah, it isn't just stupidity. It's brainwashing of a very deliberate sort. For the past 26 years, we've been told that it is "politically correct", or something wrong and evil, to actually *care* about poor people, to actually *want* to try to help other people, and to actually *respect* the human and civil rights of others. We've been brainwashed into believing that civilization is bad, and that Let-Them-Eat-Cake-ism is good.
And you wonder why we are in such deep denial. People aren't going to have a thoughtful, human reaction to anything that goes on in a neighborhood like mine, where having the police search the building's hallways with *dogs* 3-5 nights a week is common policy, until the mess is literally *right in their backyards* and in their faces and impossible to hide from.
And by then it will be too late, because only the richest, most corporate 10% will be allowed the "almighty privilege" to work for *money* actually....the rest of us will be living in a Debtor Prison State, walled in from the rest of the world that wants to see us *dead*. All over the behavior of companies *we didn't restrain*.
Trust me when I say this: The walls and barricades going up at the Mexican border, and the tighter restrictions on travel to Canada....they aren't there to keep *them out*.
They are there to keep us Citizens *in*....the vise is already tightening with stricter, more pro-Big Banking bankruptcy laws that put most working people *one serious illness* away from being destitute for *LIFE*.
What else is it going to take? A Quarantine due to "bird flu"? A total flight of salaried and union labor overseas, as the CEOs sell us all out *one last time*? Or maybe the return of Debtors Prison and Indentured Servitude to legality?
Will people wake up then, when they are trapped and cannot get out?
Gotta wonder.....the Police State is already here for those of us who are Poor and have Issues (mental illnesses and such). Isn't that enough, or does everyone have to feel the fascism bite down harder?
Just asking.....
