Well, you had one good answer there. Sexing Oscars is practically impossible. There is no reliable way to do it unless you actually catch them breeding and see who lays the eggs.

It is difficult to distinguish between the male and female, but during spawning, the female has obvious genital papilla.
Some other lesser known methods that are used by experienced hobbyists are:
Body shape and size. In general, in the wild, males in this group are larger than females. That is, if you find a pair in the wild, the male will be larger than the female. However, some females are definitely larger than some males, so size alone is not a perfect indicator. Females are also rounder, though this difference is easily masked by a belly full of food.
Fin length. Males often have longer, more flowing anal and dorsal fins (the ones on the bottom and top respectively). Again there are many exceptions to this and I have seen female oscars with dorsal fins that extended well past the end of the tail fin. So again, the presence of long fins does not necessarily indicate a male fish.
Territory:Whereas the male protects the entire territory from other males and predators, the female Oscar generally takes the pleasure to move around all over the waterspace.

Oscars are a distant relation to the cichlid family, Whatch out for the one digging holes, thats the female, The one that chases the other oscars away is the male. remove all other fish from the aquarium, also the male once spawning occurs.

It's near impossible to sex oscars because there are no distinct differences in the two. Mainly, if you keep 2 together and you start to see breeding behavior, you'll know then.
Also, you should probably know that one oscar can and will get greater than 14 inches long, so it's reccomended to have atleast 50 gallons per fish.
