Our travel adviser told us to be very careful because street crime has been a real problem lately. We are going in April and will have a driver, but does anyone know particular areas to avoid, or particular areas that have good security?

Naples has always had crime problems, that's the way people survive there. Mostly theft. Don't go around parading camcorders and jewellery. Put your money in the hotel safe and hang your card or cash on your neck, waist or anywhere but a handbag or wallet-pickpockets are artists there. Keep to the main roads. Double check parcels after buying them, as often they get substituted for bricks.
There are no areas with good security, but if you take due precautions it should be all right.

i have been to naples a year ago. u do not need to worry. it is no different any big commercial city in the world in crime-wise. may be narrow, crooked streets will scare you at first but there is no need to get scared. very warm n helpful ppl around.
one thing that direve you crazy will be the amnt of beggers in the streets.
but other than that there would be no problem. if you have not booked up a hotl yet, i would recommend " hotel sant'eligio"
not a luxury hotel (i guess there is no 5 star hotel in the city center anyway), but small place with geat staff.

How long ago is lately? I was there 6 years ago and had no problems. at the time we stayed in a hotel right by the the castle on the water. The place was nice, and we had no problems anywhere.
