I know three sisters who were excited to surprise their father with a big gift for his 60th birthday. The oldest is married with a newborn. The second was married last year. The third is unmarried, but in a relationship.

The two married sisters had independently assumed they would split three ways, reasoning that it's 3 parties and 3 daughters.

The third sister assumed they would split 5 ways, reasoning that there are 5 adults in on the gift.

This is now causing a lot of tension in the family!

So, what is fair: 5-way or 3-way? And why?

(There was an earlier Yahoo! Answer concerning a similar situation, but was between couples and friends. My question involves family and a gift for the dad of 3 sisters so I thought I'd post to get opinions about this slightly different circumstance.)

I'd say that there are 3 sisters that would buy 3 presents if they were to buy separately. Therefore, just split it 3 ways. Having said that though, compensation should be made if any of the sisters is a lot poorer than the other 2 and can't afford whatever amount it is - $100 is a lot less to working people than it is to a student etc.

3 ways, I'm assuming that there is only 3 children, right? Well there is no reason for it to be split 5 ways, that's just silly. The married sisters each have their own little families they count as 1.

I think that it should be three ways, but if the third sister isn't married, or not making as much money, then she shouldn't be paying for as much as the married sisters. It depends on how the husbands feel. If they are close to the father, then 5 way, if they aren't, then 3 way.

If the gift is only going to be from the daughters then go ahead and split it three ways. If the other two adults say that they want the gift to also be said that it was from them then they should pitch in and split it five way.

I think the 3-way split is the fairest way, because it's actually the 3 siblings who are buying the gift for their father. When my mother has a birthday, my husband doesn't buy her a gift, but I sign his name to whatever gift I give her and he does the same when it's his mother's birthday. As far as gift giving goes, we are a couple and we function as one.
