Edema also known as oedema means swelling of body parts due to fluid retention. It is the accumulation of excessive serous fluids in cells or cavities of the body. It mainly affects lower body parts, mostly foot and ankles. It can slow down the healing process, increase the chances of developing skin infection, affect blood circulation and can be painful. Edema is not a disease; it only indicates that something is wrong in the body. Edema is due to an underlying problem in the body.
Edema Causes
Following are some of the causes of edema. Heart Failure, Anemia, Kidney disease, Low protein level in the blood, Liver disease, Malnutrition, Starvation for longtime, Thyroid disease, Weak veins, Medications, Pregnancy, Menstrual cycles, Immobility. Sometimes even a healthy person can get edema but it gets cured automatically after some time. Heat and hot weather can also cause edema.
Use mustard oil
Mustard oil is an effective home remedy for edema. Take some warm mustard oil and rub it on the affected areas. Soak 2 teaspoons of mustard seeds in water and apply the solution to the affected areas. Apple cider vinegar helps to remove excess fluid in the body cells and cavities.
Eat low carbohydrate diet
Salt causes body to retain water, so avoid salty food. Eat food that has low carbohydrate in it, because carbohydrate has more water content. Eat protein and fat rich food. Avoid fruits and vegetables because they increase the fluid level in the body. Eat low-sodium diet because medicines will be ineffective if you eat high-sodium diet.
Other Suggestions for Edema
Exercise regularly by trying to keep your body engaged in physical activities. This will help you to get rid of excessive fluid in body cells and cavities. Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol. For swollen feet, stretch out your legs on a table and keep them slightly raised with the support of a pillow.

usually your feet get swollen for 2 main reasons, one is that you have been having too much salt and are retaining water. The water tends to collect in your ankles and feet. The best thing to do of course is cut out the salt and take a diuretic, and wait for nature to take it's course.
Of course it can be a problem when you go from a cold climate to a hot climate a lot of times people just get swollen feet. In that case, you should put your feet up as much as possible, and also put them in ice cube bath's.
If it isn't something like this, it may be something more serious and you should see a doctor or accupuncturist

Swollen feet and legs, referred to medically as edema, occur when fluid is retained in the spaces between body cells. Edema typically affects the feet, ankles and lower legs, but can also impact any area of the body, causing systemic symptoms.
Causes:
Edema can be caused by a serious condition of the kidney, heart, liver or blood vessels, but many other factors can contribute to its onset, including:
Eating a poor diet high in salt and carbohydrates
Abusing laxatives
Abusing diuretics
Abusing drugs
Taking birth control or hormone replacement therapy pills
Pregnancy and PMS
Sodium retention
Varicose veins and history of phlebitis
Allergic reactions
Neuromuscular disorders
Trauma
Symptoms:
Initially, the feet and legs will appear swollen as the day progresses, but after a period of time, the swelling will set in first thing in the morning and continue to worsen throughout the day. Long-term edema causes pitting: When you press on the swollen area for a few seconds, you will notice an indentation in that area. Continued swelling can cause skin ulcerations.
Over time, other symptoms will develop:
High blood pressure
Headaches
Increased urination
Palpitations
Swollen hands and/or wrists
Puffy eyes
Weight gain
Relief and Prevention:
The hallmark of treatment is to reduce the swelling, and the first line of defense: leg elevation. Elevate legs above the level of the heart, which puts minimal pressure on the backs of the knees and thighs and lower back. Just sitting in a reclining chair in front of the TV is a great way to elevate your legs. Many products, for use at home or at work, can also help reduce swelling.
Other aids include:
Leg wedges to elevate the feet while sleeping.
Support socks and stocking, either over-the-counter or customer-made.
Support socks and stockings come in various gradients depending on the pressure needed, and various lengths depending on the level of the edema.
Proper fitting shoes and socks. Go out to buy new shoes in the afternoon to get the best fit.
Techniques to help decrease swelling:
Increase muscle activity with walking.
Avoid standing in place for long period of time.
Avoid sitting with the feet dependent.
Limit salt intake.
Do not abuse diuretics, but a short-term course may be helpful.
Do not abuse laxatives.
Drink plenty of water.
Avoid contraceptive pills and hormone replacement therapy if possible.
Use a compressions pump to help fluid return to the blood vessels.

If you have swollen feet theat means you are retaining fluid. Now the reason ans the changes you need to make to imrpove this is what you must change. Depending on your age and your health problems and a Dr.'s advise. You first need to stop all salt, that means no saltshaker, no processed meats, potato chips, canned soups or anything with added or hiden salt. Soda is a very big culprit. then drink water, lots of it and make sure to get enough electrolytes, like calcium, potassium and things like that. you can take supplements of vitamins and minerals and drink a sports drink every day. Then when you are resting, sitting down, get your feet above your heart, That means lying down with pillows piled up and feet way up there. Also, boil eggs twice a week and eat one or two a day at least. Not fried or scrambled but boiled. Make sure you are eating well, veggies , fruit and protein, broiled, baked or boiled dinners are a good way to sook your meat. If you are under a Dr's care and you have heart problems you must be on a diuretic which gets rid of fluids? Take them as prescribed but also eat banannas and cut out all those things he tells you to. The only way to get better is to do those things. Exercise under his care also, move some every day....just walking on flat ground is good. I pray that God will touch you with his healing power and that he sill give you the wisdom to know what you must do and the strength and willpower to do it. you are loved and I know you want to be better. About 25 years ago when I worked for a fast food restaurant in high school, I came home every night with badly swollen and aching feet. Through experimentation I found that rubbing alcohol works fantastic! Now I know why... it evaporates quickly and it takes the heat with it. Your feet will feel SO much better. Just take cotton balls and put rubbing alcohol (isopropyl) on them. Rub them all over your feet, ankles, and in between your toes. It feels great and it really works.

swollen feet are a bigger problem than one would think. you have circulation problems, which means, that for some reason your heart isn't taking care of your fluid load.
do you exercise? are you overweight? high blood pressure? you need a good physical to find out what is really going on, that includes blood work.

keep your feet elevated when you are sitting or lying down. Is the swelling chronic? call your doctor about this problem, he may be able to prescribe medication to reduce swelling such as a diuretic. please don't avoid your doctor, realize that foot and leg swelling (pedal edema) can be a sign of an underlying condition, sometimes a very serious one (such as Congestive Heart Failure aslo known as CHF). I'm not saying this is what it is, I'm just telling you to be safe, this is something your PCP MUST know about!! Good luck!
