OMG, I can't believe I just ran across your question! GFR was outstanding. A picture of Mark Farner from the Cobo Concert in 1976 is actually my screensaver on my computer right now! I thought I was the only diehard fan left. I saw their comeback concert in '96 at Pine Knob and they sounded as good as they ever did. "Inside Lookin' Out" was my favorite song by them.

You just made my evening!

OMG! So much amazing music came out of Detroit City!
Ted Nugent and Amboy Dukes, Rare Earth, Iggy Pop, Bob Segar, the whole Motown Sound. Not fair to pick !
I happen to know Mark Farner from GFR so, ok I will go with that from loyalty to a long lost friend,,,

About the rock'n'roll dance in town
And you know I just gotta hear that band play
Tonight..."

I'm down with that, The Silver Bullet Band is pretty good too. What about the Funk Brothers, the Motown house band.
The Jacksons were from Gary, IN.

Suicide Machines or 19 Wheels.

For a well known band I'd say Bob Seger, who isn't really a band but you know what I mean.
