Most of these companies you only make about a 25% profit on what you sell, Avon and Partylite for example. You sell 100$ and you only get 25! That doesn't seem like much of a profit to me. Other Companies you can earn 50% like Mary Kay so sell 100 and get 50.
The only way to make money off of these businesses is to work it like a business. Its not really something you can do part-time or whenever you see fit. You have to focus or it won't work out. That is the only way people are sucessful in these types of businesses

Oh I can relate. I hated going to the parties every time they would say you would be good at this and I was not interested at all. Funny thing is life changes and now i am a stay at home mom selling Mary Kay. I used the product for year about 10 now and my consultant had mentioned it but because people in the past had been so pushing I tuned her out. It was about a year later when I listen to the marketing plan i decided to give it a try figuring I would get my products for half price so what did I have to loose if it didn't work. A year later I quit my job and now I am raising my children and selling Mary Kay part time I really enjoy what I do i think it is different then most home based sales because it is about building relationship with my customers and offering a service that's why I like it.
So to answer you question yes with most you can make money and have fun too. Get all the facts about the business plan do a little research on your own find out do you have to place a certain number of orders and what percentage do you get some are really low lke 20%. Have fun with it

I tried Avon for a while. I like them the best... you dont have to buy a "kit", you don't have to pay any up front money except like $10 to sign up or whatever, and you dont have to have parties. You can just purchase the catalogs and some various samples and sell it that way. I am more of a shopper than a seller so I think I ended up breaking even after I bought all my catalogs every 2 weeks, sold some stuff, and bought stuff for myself. The best customers are friends, coworkers, and family. I tried dropping off catalogs on peoples doorsteps and never got one call. But you'd be suprised how much crap your best friend and mother can purchase in a month.
My mom did Mary Kay for a long time and she did pretty well but she had to have all this on hand stock of each item which I'm sure wasnt cheap to purchase all at once. With Avon you just get your orders, place them once a week online, and get your stuff in the mail a few days later. Yeah your customers have to wait a few days but unless your gonna be one of those hardcore sellers with an entire store in your house then they will just have to be patient. Hope this helps.

I do Purse Party and absolutely love it! With Purse Party there are not consultants every where you look so it's so easy to book parties. You also get apid 30% commission the night of your party and you can earn an extra 10%! The start up cost for your kit is also very cheap in comparison to other companies. I'm an Avon rep and I really like it!! My mom used to sell Mary Kay and it got very expensive. Avon only costs $10 to start your business, and all you do is purchase brochures from then on, and they're cheap!! It's a great business, and many people purchase Avon so it's easy to get your name out there. If you have any questions about it, visit my site and send me an e-mail...www.youravon.com/meganwatkins. I'd be glad to help you out!

No they are not, I've tried. Lost time and lots of money buying catalogs every campaign and driving across town trying to find one customer, then when I did I had to track them down several times for just a 10 dollar order. I settled for a company where I won't ever stock or deliver ever again and get paid every month like clockwork, FOREVER! Jennifer

Well, it works for some and they do really very well. But these are probably the top 3%. Majority just fizzle away. Check out http://www.geocities.com/lcming/network [Top 10 networking tips/myths] for why people dont stick on.
Check out http://www.geocities.com/lcming/marykay1 for a "debate" : Avon vs Mary Kay.
