Okay: here's the details: lots of listeners were uploading (I think) a demo for "I Disappear", which was on the Mission Impossible II for free on NAPSTER. Can you say Napster?
To continue, they then found out that their ENTIRE CATALOGUE was FREE. So, Lar$ UlRICH took it to the Senate Judicial Comitee for copyright infringement. The whole band had an issue with the music downloads because they thought that through copyright, you could NOT illegally resale music by any means without purchase.
But, the media lashed back at Lars. What they didn't know it the fact that the whole band knew it was wrong, even though that would've inevitably sold more albums and gained more fans. The media labled them, as WikiPedia puts it, "selfish rock stars who were out of touch with their fans." If you've seen "Napster Bad!", you know what I'm talking about. I've got a list of information on the Napster controversy in my sources.
But either way, because iTunes requires you to pay, it's okay. Fortunately, Metallica has relinquished their hatred on Napster and other file sharing sites (I've been uploading Metallica on uTorrent.)

If I had to guess,it's because they make money when some people buy the iTunes. When people download from limewire or bearshare those whinebags don't get a penny.I guess the millions they have made over the years apparently aren't enough for them, why else would they speak out and help the record industry prosecute people who are (or were) fans and helped them get where they are today?
