if you try to withdraw more than you have in there won't it automatically say insufficient funds

depends on the bank. i had a bank that would let me take out $500 more dollars than i had and it would charge me an overdraft fee. now i have wachovia and i cant do that at a atm machine. but if I have $1 in my account i can buy something using my checkcard and get cash back for up to $500.

Yes it is taken out automatically.
Yes, believe it or not, some banks will let you take out more than you have. Odd, but they just then bounce your withdrawl and wrack up the fees.
