JaMarcus Russell and Brady Quinn are much better talents than he is. He is small, doesn't have fantastic throwing strength, and was hyped up because of the team he was on.

He is essentially a slower weaker Vick

Winning the Heisman does not always mean a great pro career. This is especially true for quarter backs. Manning finished second in the Heisman to Danny Wurfel.
The defenses in the pros are a lot faster, bigger and everyone in the secondary is talented.
A pro quarter back has to have a strong arm be able to see over those big offensive and defensive lineman. Yes there are some exceptions to the rule(Vick,Pennington) But Vick is very mobile and Chad Pennington is very accurate.
Also,as said before here he did not have a very good combine work out. I am not anti Troy Smith and I think he deserved the Heisman. But I will be surprised if he goes any sooner than late 2nd round.

Many people would be surprised at how poorly heisman trophy winners do in the NFL, or how low they are drafted. Example: Jason White won the heisman, but went undrafted. Many players win the heisman because they are the best player or the face of the number one team in the nation. Also, in Troy Smith's case, people have issues with his height and arm strength. Personally, I think his decision making and his escapability in the pocket are both useful but maybe im wrong. Also, poor showings in the National Championship(which you cannot pin on Smith alone, as I probably could've provided more protection) and the combine have hurt him.

One of the main reasons he is not a highly rated Quarterback is that his game does not translate to the NFL as well as many other quarterbacks.

He is only 6'0 which would lead to problems seeing down field over the linemen and a large number of balls batted down. As well he seems to be more comfortable making plays outside of the pocket which is not usually a good thing for a quarterback who does not have exceptional athletic ability. It is a lot different playing against defensive ends in college who run a 4.8 - 5.0 to some NFL ends who can run 4.5's.

He also did not have the greatest combine where he came in out of shape compared to the other second tier quarterbacks and had trouble in some of the throwing drills, under throwing a few receivers. It highlighted some weaknesses in his game and made people question his work ethic since he is not a pick who is going to come in and be able to start in the NFL like Quinn, he is going to need some development time.

When there is a large number of quarterbacks who are similar in skill, it does not take much to get put at the lower end of the list. As well, when most teams are relatively happy with their QB situation it isn't as big of a need.

I would expect Smith to fall into the 3rd round, with a decent chance of him slipping into the 4th or 5th round. His Pro Day will be very important for him. If he shows up out of shape again or throws poorly it will send him down the rankings very quickly.

Probably because he did quite miserably in the combine, and the only reason he was good is because he was one of the oldest guys on the field. Hewas really good as a senior because everyone out there was either his age or younger. Unlike the NFL where a player could technically play until he died. Just think about it, when you play with a child you beet them right? So he was like a good senior that turned out to be a great college athlete. He was carried by his athleticism. He was carried by his ability to run the ball and take hits from guys only weighing thirty to fourty more pounds than he. He could run without paying the price of getting his by a big defensive linemen or a strong linebacker. He did have a decent arm, but it wasn't enough to really start in the NFL. Vince Young is very similar, except (stay with me on this.) Vince Young is more like a Donovan McNabb, compared to Troy Smith being more of a runner and not a runner and gunner. If Troy Smith could work on his accuracy and a little more arm strength and the poise to sit in the pocket for a long time, he could wind up being a great NFL QB, so don't give up just yet!

Because he's a third rounder who never should have won the Heisman trophy. Every year they give it to the player who had the best stats on the best team, not the best player in college football. There are probably 20 college quarterbacks who could have put up his numbers had they been surrounded by the talent that he was. Heisman winning quarterbacks do not have much success at the NFL level because they are not usually that good. If you really want the best player in college to win the Heisman, scouts should vote on it, not media members and past winners who don't pay enough attention.

Because THE WHOLE NATION saw what happens when an overrated player, who thinks that he is the best in the world("there ain't no defensive back, linebacker or lineman that can stop me"-troy smith interview before national championship game) tries to play against a team that is prepared and loses his cool when one of his teammates gets hurt. He isn't a great football player and he shouldn't have gotten awarded as "the best college football player in America". The NFL finally realized this.

I'm surprised he's that far UP in the draft after seeing him in the BCS game and his Combine workouts I'd imagine him definetly being a second day pick! I'm an Ohio State Fan in Columbus, but I doubted him all year! (I'm also a realist) I thought they overhyped him way too much. He always did great when he had a lead that his oppurtunistic defense supplied him, but as soon as he had a fast defense, and a deficit to overcome-he was as useful as wet toilet paper. He really couldn't hold Vince Young's jock. He also fumbled 2 snaps against Michigan that kept Michigan in the game and could've lost it. (albeit in shotgun formations) He isn't an NFL QB he could be a Kordell Stewart at best.

Because he is too short(barely 6') too small for a quarterback. He can't see over the trees(defensive lineman) and his passes get knocked down or picked off. He played terrible in the championship game, had a decent senior bowl and had a mediocre combine. Some say he might need to have a decent pro day just to get picked on the FIRST DAY!

well because of the loss to Florida he doesn't get the hype that Brady Quinn does
and if you think about it the exact opposite is happening to Jamarcus Russell all he did was Torch a very terrible ND defense. now he is the best QB out there, Nobody was thinkning that b4 the ND game
So allot of it is just hype

and of course Size, Size really matters in the NFL it makes all the difference in the world that Troy smith is 6'0 and not 6'2, according to the scouts that is
