The United States and its' allies defeated Germany, Italy, Japan, and a few less notable countries in a six year war. While the causes for this war started literally days after the end of the First World War, the general reason was Imperialistic in nature, and megalomaniac national leaders. While the USA only participated in the actual warfare for a little less than 4 years, they aided the British, French, Chinese and Soviet Union from the outset with supplies and other assistance from the beginning. France surrendered to the Germans, and both the British and Soviet Union may also have fallen without this aid. The USA did not officially take part in the hostilities until they were attacked by the Japanese in December of 1941. By openly declaring war on the United States, Hitler, Tojo, and Mussilini, brought the full weight of America's industrial might down upon them, resulting in the use of the two atomic bombs to end the war. As a very important side bar, the world stood witness to the greatest act of genocide in history as Adolph Hitler's plan of ethnic cleansing was perpitrated on the Jewish people, Slavic people, and anyone that did not fit the Nazi idea of a superior race. This war also catapulted the United States and the Soviet Union into their respective "Superpower" positions resulting in 40 years of "Cold War", it weakened the Chinese political landscape to a point the the Communist Chinese took power, and began the death of British and French Imperialism. Hitler Committed Suicide, Tojo was executed, and Mussilini was publicly lynched by his own Italian people. It is impossible to explain what happened during this war in "Answers", as there are entire libraries dedicated to the study of it. If you are interested in it, I would suggest going to the library of Congress website and doing a little more research.

There was a great deal of stuff that happened during WW2, it was a big old war and there were a lot of different aspects at play between a lot of different countries. Many historians bicker and disagree about the motives and intentions of many of the great powers preceding and during the conflict. Especially Germany, Russia and America.
There are many many books about the topic (as is to be expected), but try Wikipedia, it usually gives a nice brief and simple overview of events.

to start the war the europeans tried to appease hitler. instead of doing the hard right they did the easy wrong and let hitler take poland. once he had poland it was all down hill for the rest of the world. he wanted more and more. the only reason england wasn't taken was because, they were an island. if hitler would of had the resources to go over the channel england would of fell.
as for why did the us get involved? simply put pearl harbor. after the japanese bombed us we declared war on japan and then hitler bit off more than he could chew by declaring war on us. we fought on 2 fronts the pacific and the european / african fronts . our navy beat up on japan then we nuked them in 1945 and they surrendered. after d -day the germans days were numbered and by may 1945 they surenndered too. they did muster up one last attempt in the battle of the bulge to win but couldn't do it. one more thing hitler had a treaty with russia not to attack them and he went back on his word thats how they ended up on our side. moral of the story. dont cator to bullies punch them in the nose and put them in their spot.

Short Answer - Germany, Italy and Japan decided they wanted to take over the world, and the rest of the world said "No thanks, we'll just kick your butt instead".
Except for France, they just rolled over and played dead.
((But what do you expect from a country who's greatest fighting force is made up of mercenaries from other countries.))
