It is widely accepted that Mark Chapman killed Lennon.

There is no controversy behind it! Mark David Chapman Shot Lennon. He was a sick man that could not find fame on his own so he decided to kill a famous person and get that fame. he was a Beatles' fan that went too far. After shooting John he didn't run away, he sat down on the sidewalk and waited for the police to arrive. They asked him if he knew what he did and he repiled, " I just shot John Lennon."
