I believe the first foreign built GM cars were branded "Geo". Built by Suzuki I believe, they branched out to Korean makers too. Now they're folded into Chevy.

There's no such thing as an American car anymore. Parts are made all over the world from whoever builds them best. GM's steering gear is superb, for instance, and is used in many other makes.

And the automobile market is worldwide anyway. The provincial little USA is a small and barely important part of the market. Toyota understands this.

i own a shop and i don't know the exact year ,but they have been doing it for a while, its all over the high cost of labor here in the states,i think the automotive industry is waking up,no one needs to make 25 bucks an hour to make cars ,plus all the other benefits they have, the more they make the higher the cars are going to go too, pretty soon we will out price our self, and everything will probably be built over seas, there has to be a lI'mit on some things,im not going to pay 50-60 thousand bucks for a car that is not going to last me more than ten years at the most if that, and that's what its all coming down to money, those who have it,and those who don't,so we buy what we can afford to buy, regardless of where it comes from, good luck,i hope this helps.

Probably about the same time Americans started buying foreign cars.

Americans are too lazy to roll down their own windows.
They need to have perfectly clean air from every factory.
They need to have big pension plans.
They need to have the best health care plans.
They need to be entertained constantly.
They need to have perfectly safe vehicles to compensate for their inability to drive.
Let me know if you need more reasons. I could give you at least 100 more if not a 1000.
