Because several years ago the NCAA decided to set the number of at-large bids for the mens tournament at 34. There are now 31 conferences whose champions get automatic bids. Hence 65 teams. The situation was created when the 16-team WAC split into two separate conferences, the WAC and the Mountain West.
The women's tournament has only 64 teams- they decided to go with 33 at large bids.

whilst the Mountain West and Western Athletic conferences chop up (after the two 3 hundred and sixty 5 days probationary era), the MWC replaced into granted the thirty first vehicle bid. somewhat than decrease the form of at-large bids to 33 like the ladies did, the boys purely stored the at-large pool at 34 and threw communities sixty 4 and sixty 5 interior the play-in. form of a dumb concept, yet they gets stomped by using the a million-seed besides...i'm somewhat unbiased in direction of the belief because it extremely basically concerns to the communities playing in it.

That's the dumbest thing the NCAA has ever done to offset the 64 teams that should be in the playoffs.

because all the teams who had good record complain about how good they are and didn't get into the tournament. I bet in a few years there'll be 68 teams in the tournament, few years after that 72 teams and so on and so on until there's 128 teams in the tournament.
