Different women ovulate at different times during their cycle. Some women even ovulate during their period (though this is rare). When you ovulate is the only time you can become pregnant. Ovulation typically only holds about a 24 hour time window. However, live and active sperm can be present in a woman's body for up to a week after intercourse and if any of this active sperm happens to still be around when you ovulate, you could become pregnant.

Typically, no, you probably won't conceive the day after your period, as the average ovulation time for a woman on a "perfect" cycle is the 14th to the 16th day (roughly) of her cycle. This does not mean though that you don't ovulate at the time after your period. Even if you are ovulating, the chances of conceiving depend on the fertility of the woman and man involved, but a woman will not become pregnant every time she ovulates, even if she has unprotected sex that day.

If you don't know when you ovulate, don't assume there is a safe time you can have sex and not become pregnant. Even if you do know when you ovulate, don't assume there is a safe time you can have sex and not become pregnant, as a woman's ovulation time can change from month to month.

You can track when you ovulate, but there is no fail safe method. Even Family Planning methods (which consists of tracking ovulation as a means of natural birth control) result in unwanted pregnancies; in fact, these methods are on average only 80% effective: "Of 100 couples who use any of these methods for one year, 20 women will become pregnant with typical use" (Planned Parenthood on the effectiveness of fertility awareness or Natural Family Planning methods).

"Tracking Ovulation:

A woman's monthly cycle is measured from the first day of her menstrual period until the first day of her next period. On average, a woman's cycle normally is between 28-32 days, but some women may have much shorter cycles or much longer ones. Ovulation can be calculated by starting with the day the last menstrual period (LMP) starts or by calculating 12-16 days from the next expected period. Most women ovulate anywhere between Day 11 - Day 21 of their cycle, counting from the first day of the LMP. This is what many refer to as the "fertile time" of a woman's cycle, because sexual intercourse during this time increases the chance of pregnancy. Ovulation can occur at various times during a cycle, and may occur on a different day each month."

Fertile Right After Period

I'll answer this again here to people know...

You can always get pregnant. Even during your period, your first time having sex, while youre on the pil/ring/patch. Theres always a chance.
The pill is only 98-99% effective, and a condom alone is 94-96%.
Abstance alone is the ONLY 100% effective way of not becoming pregnant.
If your over 18, or your boyfriend is, the Plan B pill is now available over the counter at your pharmacy. (Its still in the pharmacy however, and be ready to show ID). Or go get a pregnancy test or blood test. Plan B looses its effectivness 24-48hrs after unprotected sex, or if the condom breaks.
If you had sex today though, you might not test positive, since the egg hasnt had a chance to be fertalized. So if you are worried at all, get Plan B. Its not 100%, but its something. It will stop the egg from being fertalized, so it is NOT an abortion pill.

*edit*
To other posts.... :)
There is a fertile time, during ovulation. But there always in a chance you can get pregnant all other times as well. Ovulation is the best time to try and concive.....since you are more able to and the egg is ready. The sperm can last aprox. 4 days after, inside.

Typically, no. Your body has just released an unfertilized egg, and it will be some time (about 2 weeks) until your ovaries will release another egg (ovulation). People have been watching out for this time period for quite some time; it's called "natural family planning". If you aren't trying to get pregnant, the best thing to do is keep solid track of your menstruation cycle, including the days that you ovulate, so that you can prevent pregnancy. Usually though, you have an a safety net of a couple weeks after the last day of your period before you ovulate and therefore have another chance to get pregnant.

Quite possible. I believe a woman's fertile period runs from 8 to 13 days after the start of her cycle, which is the first day of bleeding.

Typically, no. A woman is fertile right after ovulation, which typically occurs "mid-cycle", or around Day 14 of a 28-day menstrual cycle.

I guess not... as usually doctors recommend women with pregnancy problems to involve get involved in sexual intercourse after 16 days from the onset of their period, this is the time taken by the ovum to traverse the lenght of the Fallopian tube. At this lenght of the ovum from the uterus, the sprems can fertilize it. The day after the completion of the period which can be a maximun of 7 days, will not place the ovum in a proper fertilizable position.

I agree with Kittenpie's answer. But I stress TYPICALLY not! Usually ovulation (and thus the possibility of conception) occurs between 10-14 days. But there are cases of women getting pregnant at all sorts of crazy times during their cycle. One important variable is that sperm can survive in the woman for up to about 3 days waiting for an egg.

according to my chart and the health dept. here your most likely to be fertile approx 14days after the first day of your period. I was told if I'm trying for kids to save my "energy" for the 11-15 days after the first day of my period. And i was told in those days don't do it as much as possible, do it every other day. I now have 3 Kids.. lol
