Daylight Savings Time was initiated during WWII with the hope that it would save energy by providing an hours more sunlight and reduce the use of electric lights. Remember, this was before TV, home air conditioning and home computers and lots of automobiles. Since its inception then, there have been no studies which show that the energy savings has ever occurred as predicted. However, the supposition still persists that energy is saved regardless of the evidence denying it. The real reason that it is still around is not the farmers. They work by a different system than the city folk. The reason is retail money. When people have more daylight they have an extra hour to shop and burn gasoline to go places to shop. Taking into consideration all energy expenditures including gasoline there could be a net increase in total energy used. This is more true now than when it was introduced when few people had cars and gas was being rationed.
It is because the people who might object do not really object all that much and those who care a lot are out - lobbyed by the commercial interests.
Daylight Savings Time does not make good sense, but good sense and money do not mix well in Washington, DC.

Well this current change is simply a bunch of dumb geeks in Washington deciding that if you tack an hour of daylight on in the evening, you will save energy. They of course never crawl out of the taxpayer paid for accommodation until mid afternoon because they are too pooped from being wined and dined all night by the lobbyists so they completely miss the fact that the working slob is now getting up in the dark and using up the same amount of energy at that end of the day, possibly even more if the house is cold.

It's funny you say this because my father never acknowledged daylight savings time no matter where he was. He felt just like it was silly from the get go and just refused to adapt.

If his watch was an hour ahead or an hour behind he didn't give a rat's *** about it. He just left earlier or later, whichever was needed.

It is a stupid thing, I agree.

Saskatchewan, Canada 'doesnt have it either. The only annoying thing is having to adjust to all the tv stations changing! Of course farmers work from dawn to dark no matter what the clock says, so what do we care! ;) That and in Canada in winter it gets light at nine and dark at five, what difference does it make if it gets light an hour later when your awake through the whole light part of the day anyways.

We still have daylight savings to remind us that time doesn't really exist. That someone actually just made up the concept. And that it can easily be changed by people.

If you lived in the midwest, you'd LOVE DST. Right now the sun goes down at 6:20 p.m. Before Christmas it goes down before 5pm. We can't handle all this darkness during winter, especially when it's freezing out too. I was in AZ a couple weeks ago and hey, if I lived there I'd wonder about it too!

Look at China - as big as the US but adheres to one time zone "Beijing Time" seems to work there. What is the difference as to time - I am writing this at 1 in the morning - if I wrote it at lunch time what ramifications would it really make?

Be careful what you say about the "geeks" in Washington. You could be arrested for terrorism, shipped off to Guatanamo Bay, be denied you're right to counsel, and never seen again!
