large animal vets tend to make less than small animal vets.. the avg salary is $40,000 to $80,000

It's a limited field, unless you are hoping for beached whales or something, your best bet is to talk to people in, or formerly in the profession. You more likely will find work in a related industry, a friend of my sister ended up in Alaska working for a seafood company.
