i own a repair shop, and i think you just had a major short in it probably the headlight switch shorted out on it and burnt the wiring all up for it,its a wonder it didn't burn the car up on you ,you really are lucky on this one,id say a thousand bucks probably will be the least amount you,ll have to pay for this,if it done a lot of damage to it ,they may have to install a new harness, and this is really expensive, like i said though your really lucky it didn't burn the car up on you, anytime you smell smoke in a car take it to the nearest repair center even if your going to be late for work, good luck, this is going to be an expensive repair,I'm not going to sugar coat this one any at all,the last one i did cost around 1500 to get it straitened out ,good luck,i hope this helps.

Without seeing the car and running tests on the light switch my guess is the auto shut off switch is burned up, it detects light and turns the lights off, if yo can follow a wiring diagram and can afford $20.00 you can go to www.aldatadiy.com and buy a subscription to your car and look up the test procedures on how to find the problem and it tells you where each item go's, but ya gotta know how to read an ohm meter which is not hard find a buddy to help you. it will also give you the average cost of the part and the price of the labor just in case you don't want to tackle it yourself, look for a ASE certified shop and someone who is certified in electronics. remember you pay the mechanic to fix it right the first time and replace the bad parts only, if you don't have a clue what yo are doing you could spend some extra money doing it yourself but your price range is way off for the repair unless you burned up the harness but even then you can go to a junk yard and find a used harness that you can plug in but might take some extra time.

It just sounds like you have a short in the wiring and it ran down you battery. Get someone to look at the wiring and charge the battery. Take it to an Auto zone and ask one of them they might help you for free or at least point you in the right direction. Doesn't sound like a thousand dollar job. If you need a new batteries a good ones about 100 no more the wire could be high but not over a 100 if you get the right person heck it could be free if its just shorted out.
