What would it take to earn a scholarship to NYU or Harvard? I really want to go once I graduate and become a lawyer.

What would these kinds of colleges look for?

You don't need to go to NYU of Harvard to be a lawyer... go to a good 4 year school, get good grades, then worry about your law school. You would save more than enough money by going to a good state university to pay for law school over what NYU and Ivies charge.

Quite frankly, it is NOT hard to get in. Getting a scholarship is another problem.... Ivy League schools expect you to finance your own education, period. NONE give full scholarship. I suggest you do your undergraduate at a state university and get the best possible GPA while staying active in several community service and outreach organizations. You do NOT have to have any particular major to get in to law school (NONE is required). All you have to have is a bachelor's degree and a decent LSAT score. I was accepted to Yale for law school, but there is NO WAY I could have afforded to go. I applied just to see if I could get in. Guess what? I did. Instead I am at a very good law school, non-ivy league, with the best practical education in the nation. Also, we have state of the art facilities (built just this year), an expansive library, computer services and repair services ON STAFF for all students to access, and the #1 orator for moot court in last year's national ATLA moot court competition. Guess what? It's a STATE University. It's cheaper, and the education is MUCH better than many get in the Ivy Leagues.

Well schools like Harvard do not give scholarships based on merit, but they do give aid based on your parents income (I think it was a free ride for 40,000 and lower with sizeable financial help for 80,000 and lower). As for what you have to do to get in; lots of AP classes (like 6+), great gpa (3.7+), great SAT (2100+), and good extra curricular activities (not to mention a hook...which is one REALLY impressive thing you can focus on). But like the poster above said- if you are interested in receiving the best education you can get and not the prestige associated with your school than there are plenty of other much more affordable options that you can look into.

Extra-curriculurs, really good grades, AP courses, and if you're looking for a scholarship, being able to identify yourself as something other than white/caucasian on the application (there are lots of scholarships based on being a minority student that does well).

It would take the correct college courses in high school and the best closing marks. With the help of your guidance teacher, they will help you with what you will need. And there is always the chance to getting scholarships. good luck in achieving all you hope to. bettyk

Very high SAT scores a great GPA and extracurricular activities, volunteer work, and great reference letters. Some AP classes wouldn't hurt either.

A good GPA, an even better resume, good community service and you'll have to have a lot of money!
