My brother is Tech support for NEC North America. He told me to turn the computer off when its not in use.
Even in a stand-by mode the computer is accessible to virus' and hacking. Also the computer places things in order on a reboot. If you never turn it off, it will begin to get unpleasant glitches and remember, it is using more electricity when on standby then it does when off.

The jury is still out on this one. IMHO, keeping it on will increase the dust inside . It can be said turning it off puts wear and tear on the active components; but unless you put it to sleep, so would keeping it on. My computer boots up in under two minutes, so waiting is not an issue. I read that keeping it on increases hacker attempts. I only have to press one of two buttons on my keyboard to shut down or sleep. I build computers as a hobby and a faulty power button has never been an issue.

It depends on the way your computer is set up and how much you use it through out the day. If you don't use your computer everyday, it might be safer to turn it off (and make sure you do a proper shutdown, such as using the start menu if you are on a Windows PC). However, if you use your computer quite a bit, and you just want to turn it off to save power, but not have to wait for it to boot up everytime you need to use it, you may want to look in the control panel under the power options to see if you have support for a hibernation and/or standy-by mode. By using stand-by or hibernation mode, it will help to save on utility costs compared to leaving the computer fully powered on, but it will not require a actual "start up" when you go to return from the stand-by/hibernation mode. (In fact, the "wake up" time coming out of standy-by/hibernate mode is usual fast enough for most computers that is actually a "safer" state to have your computer in than leaving it on through out the day.)

It's usually better to keep it on, so you don't have to replace your on/off switch too soon. That's why the software brains developed what's called "standby" mode.

If you're on a Windows system, click bottom left on "Start," then click on "Turn off computer," then on "Standby."

If you're on a Mac, click top left on the Apple menu, then click on "Sleep."

That shuts down your system's main energy chewers without any harm.

The only time you should completely turn off your computer -- and I mean turning off *all* the power for it and all peripherals, with a power bar -- is when you're gonna be away from it for a few days.

It really doesn't matter anymore, this is why we have screen savers, and the computer has a fan, so it will not overheat. It is basically your own perogative, I leave mine on all the time, and reboot about every 4 days. But I also enjoy being able to get right online, instead of having to turn it on and waiting for it to boot up everyday.

You should shut it off. Like anything that is powered it produces heat, heat that over time can reduce the life of the CPU.

You should always turn the computer completely off. If you don't the computer will over heat and eventually give way and burn out.

Shut it down when you will not use for 4 hours or more.

It does waste costly electricity to keep everything powered up.
