I don't have a favourite author -- I've read so many great novels by brilliant writers that I can't choose just one, but, as overused as that excuse is, I will list the first few books that spring to mind and recent favourites (in no particular order).
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen
A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket
Power of Three by Diana Wynne-Jones
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis
The Circle of Magic Series by Tamora Pierce
Lost in the Barrens (also known as Two Against the North) by Farley Mowat
Charlotte's Web by E.B. White
The Abhorsen Series by Garth Nix
His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman
The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury
The Phanton of the Opera by Gaston Leroux
Lord of the Flies by William Golding
Silverwing by Kenneth Oppel
Song in the Silence by Elizabeth Kerner
The Giver Trilogy by Lois Lowry
Heidi by Johanna Spyri
Oh, the Places You'll Go by Dr. Seuss
SWAN (manga) by Ariyoshi Kyoko

I love the Series of Unfortunate Events!!! I think the last book, #13 The End, is the best. Also, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH is a great story. It's part mystery, part fantasy but all parts great! The book is by Robert C. O'Brien - haven't seen the movie but I bet it's great!
But, I really don't have a favorite author or book. There's just so many great ones!!! Maybe one day I will have a favorite, but right now I don't.

My favorite author is John Steinbeck. I love the way that he can introduce you to a character and you "know" him/her. His ability to bring you into the story is remarkable. I love virtually every one of his books but I guess his Pulitzer Prize winning "Grapes of Wrath" about the dust bowl and the "Okies" migrating to California is the best. Another favorite of mine is "Of Mice and Men". I couldn't end here without mentioning "Cannery Row" or "Sweet Thursday" both of which concern the lives up in Monterrey County, California.
Right behind Steinbeck is Ernest "Papa" Hemingway. Here we have "The Sun Also Rises", "All Quiet of the Western Front" and my favorite (for a short casual read) is "The Old Man and the Sea".
The other books/authors you mention are great too, but these are classic! Here's to you and good reading!!!!

Stephen King but I don't like his recent books-Dreamcatcher was really good
Overall my fav. book so far is Secrets of Chinese Meditation even though I haven't read much of it yet; of the ones I have read I think Gandhi's autobiography is the most valuable
